PRODUCE -- VEGETABLES, FRUITS, GREENS, NUTS & CUT HERBS

Ackerman Certified Organic Farm and More (Angie and Ron Ackerman -- Chenoa)

Angie and I met in Viet Nam. Of course our lives have been changed by this experience. It took Angie from her homeland in the beginning and brought her to a cold climate, but a love for growing herbs and vegetables and sharing with customers in the market. Ron's education was vocational agriculture and that is what he did in Viet Nam. His view of the use of chemicals and modern high input agriculture began to change with his experiences with Agent Orange and the results of the use of insecticides on rice growing fields. Having grown up in the waning days of American nonchemical farming it was somewhat easier to see what could be done without them and still have productive crops. So Angie and I have grown closer together in our effort to produce the healthiest produce and crops to our markets knowing they are as natural and nutritious as we can grow them. Each year on the farm is different and so we begin our 23rd year of learning about farming organically.

Olive Berry Acres offers over ten varieties of raspberries in a rainbow of colors which includes: red, purple, black and yellow. The varieties of raspberries that are grown have been selected based on flavor and immediate fresh consumption. An interesting fact about our strawberry varieties is they were both developed by Nik’s brother, Dr. Courtney Weber, Cornell University. The newest strawberry variety that will be available for harvest this year is a PURPLE strawberry. Three varieties of asparagus are grown, traditional green and an exotic purple. Vermillion Valley meats is a division of Freed Livestock which has been operated by the Freed family since 1944. We have been raising registered Angus and Limousin cattle sine then. About 20 years ago we began a crossbreeding program with the two breeds to develop Lim-Flex cattle. Lim-flex are exceptionally good mothers that produce superior quality beef. Our beef is “aged” at 34-36 degrees for about two weeks prior to processing to enhance tenderness and give it that wonderful beefy taste you can’t get in a grocery store. Cattle are born and raised on our farm so we monitor their health and growth from start to finish to ensure the highest quality product. Cattle are raised on grass from April to November and fed the best quality feeds without animal by-products. They are “finished” with farm raised, locally grown corn. We take great pride in creating a stress free environment and monitoring the health of our cattle and follow the highest animal husbandry standards. We are Beef Quality Assured Certified for proper care of our animals.  More information:  http://www.vermilionvalleymeats.com/
